Does insurance cover clinical trial costs?
It depends on the type of cost. Clinical trial costs generally fall into two groups: patient care costs and research costs.
Patient care costs are costs you would have even if you were not in a trial. They include doctor visits, hospital stays, standard treatments, lab tests, and imaging. Insurance often covers these, the same way it would outside a trial.
Research costs come from being part of the study itself. They include the study drug, lab tests done only for research, extra imaging just for the trial, and any added visits the trial requires. Insurance often does not cover these. The study sponsor may cover them instead.
Because coverage can vary, ask the study coordinator which costs are covered. Then confirm with your insurer, including whether any part of your care needs approval in advance.
