A pet-trade color morph became a cancer model
Leopard geckos are bred for color. One line, sold as lemon frost, produces a pale yellow animal that breeders prize.
It also produces tumors. The lemon frost morph develops iridophoromas, tumors of the iridophore, at a rate exceeding 80%. Iridophores are pigment cells that give reptile skin its reflective sheen. The tumors can come back after removal, and they can spread.
A study published in BMC Biology on July 15, 2026 by Hastings, Gamble, Ossiboff and colleagues sequenced the genomes of these tumors. The University of Nottingham announced the work through EurekAlert.
What the researchers did
They performed high-coverage whole-genome sequencing on matched tumor and non-tumor samples from three lemon frost geckos. Matched means each tumor was compared with normal tissue from the same animal, so inherited differences do not get mistaken for tumor changes.
Four findings stand out in their report:
- A shared missense mutation in TBP, the TATA-box binding protein, which helps switch genes on. A missense mutation swaps one amino acid for another.
- A recurrent gene fusion joining IARS1 and RNF213, present in every tumor sample.
- Copy-number neutral loss of heterozygosity in three genes with known cancer roles: MAP3K13, TENM4, and an OR2AT4-like gene. That means one parent's copy was replaced by a duplicate of the other, without changing the total amount of DNA.
- Copy-number gains in four regions of the genome.
Pathway analysis pointed to disruption in actin filament organization. Actin filaments give a cell its shape and let it crawl, which is why that pathway keeps appearing in studies of how tumors spread.
Why an animal with too much cancer is useful
This is comparative oncology: looking at cancer across species instead of only in humans and laboratory mice.
The study's authors make the logic explicit. Animals with naturally very high or very low cancer rates can reveal mechanisms of spread and of resistance that ordinary models hide. A deviation in either direction is a clue, because something in that animal's biology is pushing hard one way.
The lemon frost line has a particular advantage. The cancer-prone trait was created by breeding, it is tied to a visible color, and it is inherited in a known way. Researchers can therefore study tumor formation from the beginning rather than meeting it after diagnosis.

Evolution is the one that matters most in practice. A spot that is changing deserves a look even if it passes the other four tests. So does any spot that itches, bleeds, or will not heal.
NCI adds a practical instruction for clinicians: a suspicious lesion should be biopsied, preferably by local excision, and should never be shaved off or cauterized. If you are offered a quick cosmetic removal of a spot that worries you, ask whether it is going to a pathologist.
The human numbers, for scale
About 112,000 new melanoma diagnoses and about 8,510 deaths are projected for the United States in 2026 by the American Cancer Society, with SEER republishing them. SEER's measured five-year relative survival across all stages was 94.7% for 2016 to 2022, and 77% of cases are found while still confined to the original site.
