Does Baking Soda Cure Cancer?

Where this one comes from

The story is compact, which is part of its power. Cancer cannot survive in an alkaline body. Modern food, sugar, and stress have made you acidic. Drink baking soda in water, raise your pH, and the cancer has nowhere left to live. Some versions add that cancer is really a fungus, and that bicarbonate simply washes it away.

Every load-bearing part of that is wrong. One small piece is true, and the sections below show you how to tell them apart.

Who actually controls your pH

pH measures acidity on a scale where 7 is neutral. Your blood sits in a very narrow band, slightly alkaline, and your body defends that band fiercely. If blood pH drifts far in either direction, enzymes stop working and you become gravely ill within hours.

Two systems do the defending. Your lungs adjust it minute by minute by changing how much carbon dioxide you breathe off. Your kidneys adjust it over hours and days by deciding how much bicarbonate to keep and how much acid to dump into your urine.

A glass of anything does not override that. Cancer Research UK states it directly: the body regulates the pH of blood through several internal processes, and food does not affect it.

You can, however, change the pH of your urine. People test urine strips, watch the number move, and take it as proof the plan is working. It is proof of the opposite. The urine changed because your kidneys were protecting your blood by throwing the excess out. That strip measures your body rejecting the intervention.

The grain of truth

Tumors often are acidic, but locally, and for a reason that does not rescue the claim.

Cancer cells frequently break down glucose fast and inefficiently. NCI describes cancer cells revving up that first phase of glucose metabolism and secreting relatively large quantities of lactate as a result. Lactate is acidic, so the tissue immediately around many tumors is more acidic than healthy tissue.

Read that closely, because the myth reverses cause and effect. The acidity is a consequence of what the tumor is doing. It is not a pre-existing condition of your body that invited a tumor in.

The biology is also more tangled than either story admits. That same NCI work found tumors do not simply dump lactate as waste. They pull it back into their mitochondria and use it to build the lipids they need. Tumor metabolism is a serious research field. It is just not a field that ends with a spoon of baking soda.

Why swallowing it cannot reach a tumor

Even granting everything above, the plumbing fails.

Bicarbonate you swallow meets stomach acid first, and much of it is neutralized on contact. That fizz is the reaction happening. Whatever is absorbed enters a bloodstream that is already buffered, and your kidneys start clearing the surplus. To shift the pH of tissue deep inside a tumor, you would have to move your whole blood chemistry far enough to be dangerous, and hold it there.

That is not a theoretical objection. It is why the dose people escalate to is exactly the dose that hurts them.

Baking soda is a real drug

Sodium bicarbonate is not a folk substance medicine overlooked. It is a standard hospital drug given intravenously, and its risks are well documented precisely because doctors use it.

The StatPearls monograph lists what goes wrong. Given rapidly, it can raise blood volume enough to cause acute pulmonary edema, meaning fluid in the lungs. It can produce acute metabolic alkalosis, which lowers ionized calcium and can trigger tetany, a state of involuntary cramping and spasm. It loads the body with sodium, a real problem for anyone with heart or kidney disease.

That is the profile of a drug handled carefully by people watching bloodwork. It is not a wellness ingredient.

What happens when people take too much

The National Capital Poison Center describes the pattern. Vomiting and diarrhea come early. High sodium can cause seizures, dehydration, and kidney failure.

There is also a mechanical hazard. Bicarbonate meeting stomach acid produces carbon dioxide gas. If the stomach is full, after a large meal or alcohol, that gas has nowhere to go. Poison Control describes a woman whose stomach tore, a two-inch rupture that had to be repaired surgically. In one reported case, half a glass caused severe harm.

Someone taking this daily, escalating the dose because nothing seems to be happening, is walking straight toward that.

The version that is actually true

Here is the part worth keeping.

Baking soda does belong in cancer care, just not as a cure. NCI's guidance on mouth and throat problems during treatment recommends rinsing your mouth through the day with a solution of warm water, baking soda, and salt. Chemotherapy and radiation can leave the mouth raw, and that rinse helps.

NCI adds that you should ask your nurse to write down the rinse recipe recommended for you, since proportions should suit your situation.

So if a relative tells you baking soda has a place in cancer treatment, they are not entirely wrong. They have the right substance and the wrong job.

Why the story lands

It hands you a lever. Cancer takes away nearly every lever a person has, and this one costs a dollar and sits in the cupboard. No appointment, no referral, no permission.

It also supplies an explanation, which is its own comfort. "Your body got too acidic" answers the question that haunts people, which is why me. Real oncology often cannot answer that.

And a urine strip changing color feels like feedback. Almost nothing else in cancer gives you feedback that fast.

The harm worth naming

The direct harm is real: alkalosis, sodium overload, seizures, kidney injury, a torn stomach.

The larger harm is time and nutrition. Cancer Research UK notes that alkaline diets tend to be low in protein and dairy, raising the risk of malnutrition and shortfalls in iron, calcium, zinc, vitamin B12, and vitamin D. Losing weight and muscle during treatment is not a side issue. It affects whether you can tolerate the treatment that actually works.

And every week spent waiting for pH to fix things is a week the cancer goes untreated.

How to check a pH claim

Ask where the pH is being measured. Blood, urine, saliva, and the fluid inside a tumor are four different things, and these claims slide between them without saying so. Anyone offering a urine or saliva strip as proof has measured the wrong compartment.

Ask what regulates it. If a claim needs your body to have no control over its own chemistry, start there.

Ask whether the substance is already a drug. Many folk cures are, bicarbonate included, and then a dosing and safety monograph exists that describes the harms honestly.

Then tell your team what you are taking. Bicarbonate affects electrolytes and kidney function, and both are already being tracked in your bloodwork.
